For the 46th year in a row, the Ottawa Professional Firefighters’ Association will roll out its Help Santa Toy Parade though downtown Ottawa this Saturday.
Since 1969, the association has organized the parade, each year collecting toys before, during and after the parade. After, they donate the toys to other organizations like Toy Mountain who partner with the Salvation Army and distribute the toys to less fortunate families in the Ottawa area.
“Last year, the Salvation Army with the help of Toy Mountain was able to help 17,200 families in the Ottawa area,” Katie Clattenburg says, chairperson of the parade for the OPFA.
“It’s a big deal for me especially,” she says of the importance of donating toys to less fortunate families.
“I’ve been going to the parade since I was a child. My grandfather was a firefighter so it’s kind of been instilled in my life.”
Clattenburg says the association purchased $23,000 in toys last year for donation and has set a minimum of $18,000 this year depending on the donations made, which will be accepted until mid-December.
Firefighters will be accepting toy and cash donations along the parade route Saturday morning.
Here’s what you need to know ahead of this weekend’s parade.
Scheduled route and road closures
The parade will start at the National Archives on Wellington Street at 11 a.m. before running east to Bank Street, then south to Laurier Avenue, before heading east on Laurier and arriving at Ottawa City Hall at Elgin Street at 1:30 p.m.
Streets will be closed beginning at 11 a.m., and rolling along with the parade route. In order, the closings are: Eastbound lanes of Wellington between Old Wellington Street and Bank; Bank between Wellington and Laurier; and Laurier from Bank to Elgin.
Roads will reopen once the parade has passed.
Weather
Environment Canada forecasts Saturday will be almost Christmas-y: Mostly cloudy, with flurries in the forecast and a high of 4 C.
Last year, the weather for the parade on Nov. 22 was slightly cooler compared with this year’s forecast, with a high of 3C and a mean temperature for the day of -1 C, according to Environment Canada.
