The Société de transport de l’Outaouais is closing the Pont Noir across the Gatineau River this weekend to do urgent repairs on cracked concrete.
The bridge is part of the Rapibus corridor. The work is scheduled to take from Friday evening until Monday morning and buses will be rerouted.
STO president Gilles Carpentier told reporters Thursday that there are concrete slabs at each end of the metal bridge, and one of them is showing some cracking.
All four slabs will be replaced in the next three days at a cost of $251,000, he said.
The original installation work was done properly, he said, but the material has turned out to be “quite simply less durable than expected.” The STO plans to use poured concrete with a layer of asphalt on top this time.
Carpentier said preventive work now will avoid a situation where further cracking occurs in winter and forces an emergency closing of the bridge and repairs in cold weather.
The bridge is a little north of Leamy Lake, on a former rail line.
