A 25-year-old road worker was seriously injured early Tuesday after a car slid on greasy snow-slicked pavement just before 4 a.m. and crashed into a worksite on the westbound Highway 417 at Metcalfe Avenue, pinning the man between pieces of construction equipment.
Paramedics said the man was treated for suspected pelvic fracture before being transferred to the Ottawa Hospital trauma unit where he was listed in stable condition.
Ontario Provincial Police is investigating the incident.
It was the worst of several crashes, mostly fender-benders Tuesday morning, as the region awoke to the first real snow covering of the winter following flurries overnight.
OPP and city police warned drivers to drive carefully on the greasy streets.
The flurries are expected to end Tuesday morning and the temperature is expected to climb to a high of about 1 C.
Flurries are expected to return Tuesday night as the thermometer dips to about -5 C, but highs for the rest of the week are expected to be in the 5-8C range.
