Shawn Lemon weighs 251 pounds or, in metric, 114 kilograms.

Lemon’s Yorkshire terrier, Dallas, weighs maybe five pounds, which in metric is the daily nutritional requirement of, say, a German shepherd.

But the Redblacks defensive end says he and Dallas, named for the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, his favourite team growing up, have similar outlooks.

“We’re very stubborn,” says Lemon. “Very.”

Which can be a charming quality in a fur-faced companion, and, depending on which side of the line of scrimmage you find yourself, a desirable or frustrating trait in a lineman.

Stubbornness has helped propel the 27-year-old Lemon, who grey up in Waldorf, Maryland, south of Washington, D.C., to a Canadian Football League career with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Edmonton Eskimos and Calgary Stampeders, his two-year Calgary stop including a Grey Cup in 2014.

This year he was picked up the Pittsburgh Steelers and then the San Francisco 49ers. After his release by the 49ers on Aug. 31, he was snapped up the Redblacks. On a defence already known for its quarterback sacks, he chipped in with five sacks of his own over the remainder of the 2015 regular season.

Lemon was in his junior year at the University of Akron when he went looking for an “apartment-sized” dog with personality. Research led him to Yorkies, and Dallas, as energetic as he is affectionate, has lived up to the breed’s billing. “He’s my best friend,” Lemon says.

What else does the linebacker and terrier have in common? “We both like to eat,” Lemon says with a laugh, adding that Dallas favours certain snacks, which his human companion is happy to provide.

Dallas isn’t the only Yorkshire terrier in the family. Lemon’s mother met Dallas and was so taken that she got her own Yorkie, Bentley.

Mayor to council: Hue the line

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson can’t dictate the dress code for members of Ottawa council, but he can make recommendations. And for Wednesday’s session he’s suggesting Redblacks gear — or at least items in the appropriate colours — to show support for a team that has “made us proud all season” and now will carry the city’s name into Sunday’s Grey Cup championship against the Edmonton Eskimos in Winnipeg.

Ottawa vs. Edmonton. Everyone vs. Toronto!

Is there a politician who works Twitter better than Jim Watson? Ottawa’s affable mayor is a constant presence on the social network, reaching out to his 65,500 (!) followers with 140-character bursts that range from updates on his travels — today a trade missing to Beijing, tomorrow a spaghetti supper for the Youth of Manotick — to statements from the heart. (“We should not be fearful of refugees. We should embrace them.”)

His best tweets, though, could come in his interplay with other mayors. When Hogtown’s John Tory suggested that the multi-colour TORONTO sign from the Pan Am Games be installed at the Canadian Tire Centre that is home to the Ottawa Senators, Watson responded that this city would prefer Toronto’s infamous dead raccoon, since “it would be better for tourism.”

Now Watson is Twitter-fishing for ideas for the terms of the usual friendly bet he’s making with Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson. No suggestions yet from Iveson, who appears to be still busy reminding Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi of Edmonton’s win last Sunday. Others, though, have proposed that the loser rides a log down the Ottawa River (Iveson), sleeps in an igloo for a night (Watson) or shovels the winner’s driveway (toss-up).

The best idea, however, might be that of someone called @Fffiesty, who suggests that the losing mayor — wherever he’s from — must wear a Toronto Maple Leafs sweater for a week.

Take that again, John Tory.
