Remember a few weeks back when I said OC Transpo wants to raise fares by an average of 2.5 per cent next year, but wouldn’t say exactly how much that would cost individual riders.
The move left some councillors scratching their heads.
“I think it’s unfortunate that we, as part of the deliberations for the 2016 OC Transpo budget, can’t have before us a fare table so that both commissioners and the public know in concrete terms what we mean when we talk about percentage fare increases,” said Rideau-Rockcliffe Coun. Tobi Nussbaum. “A broad percentage increase without a corresponding fare table does not allow people to understand what this will mean for them.”
Well, transit commission chairman Stephen Blais ended the mystery Friday afternoon, outlining the OC Transpo’s position and revealing a 2016 fare table in a memo to his council colleagues.
“I believe this fare table is in keeping with what transit riders and the taxpayer at large expects. I would be happy to discuss and look forward to a fulsome discussion at Transit Commission on Dec. 3,” Blais writes in the memo.
Presto users, get ready to pay. The regular e-purse fare is slated to increase from $2.84 to $3, a 5.6 per cent increase. Meanwhile, the monthly community pass would be frozen at $41.75.
