Three pedestrians were struck by three separate vehicles within a half-hour span of each other on a rainy Friday afternoon, including an 11-year-old girl who is in critical condition.

Paramedic duty officer Jeff Teed said the girl was hit by a car and thrown several feet into the air at 5:20 p.m. on Innes and Trim roads, where she lay unconscious on the ground. An off-duty paramedic who was passing at the time assisted until more help arrived. The girl was transported to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

Earlier, at 4:51 p.m., paramedics were called to the 1600 block of Merivale Road, where a female in her 20s had been struck by a car. She was in stable condition with minor injuries.

Just 19 minutes later, paramedics were called to River and Earl Armstrong roads for a man between 60 and 70 years old who suffered a closed head injury after being struck by a car. He was transported to the trauma centre in critical condition.

Further east of Ottawa, a 56-year-old male driver was in critical condition after a head-on collision at 3:34 p.m. on Highway 174 at Canaan Road. The driver suffered major injuries to his head and chest, while his passenger, a woman in her 60s, was in serious condition with “chest and extremity trauma,” said Teed.

As the collision occurred at the dividing line between Ottawa and Prescott-Russell, seven paramedic units from both sides showed up. Teed said he was uncertain how many vehicles were involved or if there were others injured. Prescott-Russell paramedics could not be reached.

Teed said rainy conditions might have factored in to the host of collisions on Friday, and warned motorists to be careful of rain changing to ice at night due to plummeting temperatures. The low was expected to be -6 C.
