The Afghan-Canadian Community of Ottawa held a vigil on Parliament Hill Saturday to denounce the beheading of Hazaras in Zabul in early November.

On Saturday, Nov. 7, the headless bodies of four men, two women and nine-year-old girl — all members of the Hazara minority — were found in the Arghandab district of Zabul province, which borders Pakistan.

In a statement, the Afghan-Canadian community wrote: “The horrific beheading of seven Afghan Hazara citizens by ISIL (ISIS) supporters in Zabul Province is one example of thousands of instances of crimes against humanity committed in recent years in Afghanistan. This incident demonstrates unequivocally how heavy and unbelievable the consequences can be of underestimating the threat of, and not fighting back against, mediaeval religious tyranny and extremism.

“Despite the fact that ISIL and Taliban terrorist bands murder our compatriots in the most grisly manner solely because of their religious and ethnic affiliation, no Afghan or international entity has seriously addressed the threat of these evil forces, and with their nonchalant attitude the Afghan government and its international supporters have set the stage for further such atrocities in the future.”

Included in the statement was a list of eight demands to the Afghanistan government, the Canadian government and the international community.
