Ottawa – Today, the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) made public its report on the investigation into the September 2013 collision between an OC Transpo bus and a VIA Rail train in Ottawa. The Canadian Transportation Accident Investigation and Safety Board Act provides the TSB with the responsibility of conducting independent investigations and making non-binding recommendations designed to eliminate or reduce any safety deficiencies.

The report contains five recommendations, four of which are directed to Transport Canada and one to the City of Ottawa. With respect to the recommendation directed to the City, the City will be conducting a study of the need, feasibility and cost of grade separations at the Woodroffe Avenue, Transitway and Fallowfield Road level crossings. In addition, the City will also be studying the Merivale Road and Jockvale Road level crossings. These studies will be cost-shared with Via Rail.

The City will review and provide its official response to the TSB’s recommendation within 90 days. The City’s response will likely be tabled at a joint Transit Commission and Transportation Committee and then proceed to City Council within this time period.

The City acknowledges the very important work that the TSB has undertaken in this matter and will continue to work closely with Via Rail to enhance public safety.
