Jacques Frémont, an emeritus professor at the University of Montreal, has been appointed as the University of Ottawa’s new president and vice-chancellor.
Frémont replaces Allan Rock, who has been in the post since 2008. The appointment by the board of governors was announced Wednesday afternoon. It is effective July 1, 2016.
As the university’s 30th president, Frémont brings 30-year background in law and academics to the post, including having served as president of Quebec’s human rights commission. He also served as the dean of the faculty of law at the University of Montreal.
“As an experienced leader and academic, Jacques Frémont will unite our community and help us write the next chapter in the history of the University of Ottawa,” said Robert Giroux, chair of the board of governors and chair of the selection committee.
