December is officially here and, with it, all the musical delights *cough* of the season.

We will get to those. But first, let’s start the week with the oft-overlooked delight that is Lost Cousins, Kingston’s eclectic, psych-pop, self-described “rock” band that is so embedded in the past, it could only exist now, playing with Harea Band and Kasador. Dec. 3, 8:30 p.m., Cafe DekcufTickets: $10. www.cafedekcuf.com

Molly Johnson

Then the big personality that is Juno-Award winning singer Molly Johnson takes to the Shenkman Arts Centre stage for what we believe will be a jazz-centred show, not least because her last album was a tribute to Billie Holiday. For $10 extra, attend a meet-and-greet with Johnson before the show, with cocktails and nibbles. Dec. 3, 8 p.m., Shenkman Arts Centre. Tickets: $20-$48. shenkmanarts.ca

Then, just as it gets too cold to think about hanging out on docks or decks, Canadian folk singer Ian Bell is joined by “Canada’s youngest shantymen,” the Pressgang Mutiny (many on leave from the Lemon Bucket Orkestra), for a celebration of songs of the Great Lakes and Seven Seas. They promise everything from traditional ballads to jigs, sung a cappella and, other times, with myriad interesting instruments. Dec. 4, 8 p.m., Rosemount Hall, 41 Rosemount Ave. Tickets: $20. www.ottawacontra.ca

Modern Baseball are a young indie-pop band from Maryland, not to be confused with Vancouver’s themed Punk Rock Baseball Club, who only sing songs about baseball. Modern Baseball do veer into other territories, and do so with a certain witty, grunge-light panache worth a listen; their sophomore studio album is due in the new year and they have been selling out venues on the U.S. leg of this tour. See them with PUP, a Toronto indie-rock band with punk edge — deserving of a headlining spot of their own, Jeff Rosenstock and Tiny Moving Parts. Dec. 4, 7 p.m., Ritual. Tickets: $20. spectrasonic.com

Zeus, like the Greek god of the same name, is an unknowable entity. The band seemed to be veering towards a Queen-like future, with 70’s- tinged, guitar-heavy, indie psychedelia; but their 2014 album Classic Zeus sent them off to a pop world with synths, like those on the incredibly-addictive Miss My Friends. So who knows what one will get tonight at Zaphod’s — a swan? a golden waterfall? Dec. 4, 8 p.m. Tickets: $15 for a limited time. zaphods.ca

Also Friday, there is avery good folk/country/roots double bill at Irene’s, headlined by Cape Breton’s all-guy group Pretty Archie, supported by Ottawa’s all-woman group Honey & Rust. Pretty Archie‘s sophomore album, released in January, has been nominated for Music Nova Scotia’s Americana/Bluegrass Album of the Year (2015) offering earnest, good-natured, foot-stompin’, good time with pithy lyrics, while Honey & Rust has a rock edge to their sweetness. Dec. 4, 9 p.m., Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank St. Tickets: $10. irenespub.ca

To completely overburden Friday, another top pick is Montreal’s The Barr Brothers, who play a confounding form of folk, informed by retro blues, big anthem sounds and the sci-fi/experimental. Did we mention they have a harpist in the band? (And only two of the members are actually brothers?) Dec. 4, 8 p.m., Salle Odyssée, 855 Boul. de la Gappe. Tickets: $31-$35. salleodyssee.ca

The weekend, some might say, belongs to Arnprior-based “troubadour” Craig Cardiff who has three gigs at The Black Sheep Inn, two of them all-ages shows (in his off time, Cardiff offers workshops with camps and schools). His songs are perfect for all ages: earnest, tuneful, soothing yet with uncloying pathos — many inspired by his “book of truths,” passed around at his concerts asking for stories from the audience. Dec. 5, 2 p.m. ($15 in advance) and 8:30 p.m.; Dec. 6, 6 p.m. Tickets: $20, 1/2 price at the door for children. theblacksheepinn.com

On Sunday, Montreal duo Ihtimanska, explores the traditional music of Bulgaria and Turkey — using saxophone and accordion. Their obvious delight in performing is enchanting as are the creative sounds they eke from their instruments, and the intricate and visceral tunes they play, echoing some long-known experience of humanity, from ceremonial to celebratory. Dec. 6, 8 p.m., Black SquirrelBooks, 1073 Bank St. Tickets: Suggested contribution of $10.

Tickets are already sold out for Ottawa’s red-hot blues group MonkeyJunk’s show on Dec. 11 at The Black Sheep Inn — and we assume Dec. 12 is close to going the same way, but the band is having a free, vinyl release concert at The Record Centre on Sunday afternoon. Conveniently, if the event is not ticketed, it cannot sell out — but getting there early to snag a spot might be necessary. The band will also be signing copies of their LP. Dec. 6, 3 to 4:30 p.m., The Record Centre.

Now, for some of the Christmas top picks.

Jerry Granelli, the last surviving member of the trio who played the original, jazz-informed score of A Charlie Brown Christmas, will be in town to play it again, live as the movie is screened. Dec. 3, 7 p.m., Dominion-Chalmers United Church. Tickets: $41.50, $19.50/children 12 and under. ottawajazzfestival.com

On Friday, everyone is invited to Come Sing Messiah!, the annual, much-anticipated event, open to all singers — no matter the skill. Time does not allow the entirety of Handel’s piece to be performed, but the big elements will be. Events begin at 6 p.m. with rehersal for singers, much recommended for novices, and the performance at 8 p.m. — which, like the singing, is open to all. Dec. 4, rehearsal at 6 p.m., performance at 8 p.m., Dominion-Chalmers United Church. Tickets: $10 for singers, $25 for audience. cammac.ca

On Saturday, mezzo-soprano Julie Nesrallah joins harpist Caroline Leonardelli and organist Matthew Larkin for a release of their new recording, Noël Nouvelet, a selection of traditional French carols and more, including a rarely-heard version of Ave Maria by Widor. Dec. 5, 8 p.m., Southminster United Church. Tickets: $20, $10 for students at the door only. www.carolineleonardelli.com

As a real treat, Britain’s early-music performers, The Tallis Scholars, perform music by Tallis, Sheppard and Arvo Pärt, in the splendid surroundings of the Notre Dame Basilica. Dec. 7, 7:30 p.m., 385 Sussex Dr. Tickets: $35. www.chamberfest.com.

Sure to sell out every year is the Thirteen Strings Christmas Candlelight Concert, who are this year celebrating their 40th anniversary. The concert includes performances by Seventeen Voyces, L’Ensemble vocal senior De La Salle, soprano Jacqueline Woodley, and baritone Geoffrey Sirett — as well as a singalong portion of the programme, all while the musicians and audience are bathed in the gentle (and forgiving) glow of candles. It’s very festive. Music to be heard includes pieces by Bach, a new work by Ottawa composer Christine Donkin to Handel’s The King Shall Rejoice. Dec. 8, 8 p.m., Dominion-Chalmers United Church. Tickets: $10-$45. www.thirteenstrings.ca.
