Mayor Jim Watson and police Chief Charles Bordeleau have expressed satisfaction following a private meeting Wednesday afternoon with police board chair Coun. Eli El-Chantiry to discuss the recent spike in shooting incidents.

“The Mayor and Chief had a good meeting and Mayor Watson is satisfied with the plan Chief Bordeleau has to address this issue going forward,” Brook Simpson, the mayor’s press secretary, said Thursday.

The meeting came after Bordeleau announced earlier this week that he would be beefing up the guns and gangs investigative unit by 12 officers to deal with the city’s shootings and to help close some investigations.

Both the mayor’s office and the police force said Wednesday that Watson and Bordeleau would be unavailable to comment after the meeting.

On Thursday, Bordeleau called the meeting “productive” and said the mayor was given a “comprehensive briefing” on both what police are facing and their policing plan after 42 shootings to date in 2015, three of them having been fatal. There were 49 shootings last year.

“It was a very good discussion and we appreciate his ongoing support of our efforts and the confidence he has in the women and men of the Ottawa Police Service,” Bordeleau said.
