Ottawa teen Ophelia Brown was outraged this week when she saw an image of Kylie Jenner in a provocative fashion shoot on Twitter — not because of the reality’s television star’s risqué outfit, but because of her prop: a wheelchair.

Angered, Brown immediately tweeted a split-screen shot of herself in her wheelchair next to the photo of Jenner posing in a gold wheelchair wearing a black leather bodice, collar, and stilettos. The photo was part of an edgy photo shoot by photographer Steven Klein for Interview magazine.

@KylieJenner wow being in a wheelchair is so fun and fashionable! #Ableism is the ultimate fashion statement!,” tweeted the Merivale High School student.

Brown’s Dec. 1 tweet has since gone viral and her story has appeared in media outlets around the world including the New York Daily News, Huffington Post and BBC.

Her point is that a wheelchair is not a fashion statement and there is nothing pleasurable about needing a mobility device. But it is, however, something that should be respected. Brown has relied on a wheelchair since she was 12 when she was diagnosed with a neurological disorder called complex regional pain syndrome.

“I was upset because seeing an able-bodied person sitting in a wheelchair as if it was a fashion statement or a prop for a photo shoot, which it definitely was, is just not what a wheelchair is,” said Brown, 17. “It’s something that gives me the ability to go to school, to go out with friends, to live like an able-bodied person, and it’s definitely not a trivial thing.”

Jenner has not responded to her tweet, but the New York Times Women in the World website posted a story — based on a statement released by Interview magazine — that the photo shoot for their “Art Issue” is homage to the controversial work of Allen Jones, a British pop artist who is famous for his pictures of half-naked women in submissive positions. Jenner is the daughter of the transgendered former Olympian, Caitlyn Jenner and half sister to celebrity Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian.

“According to a statement by the magazine is part of their artistic tradition, placing ‘Kylie in a variety of positions of power and control and exploring her image as an object of vast media scrutiny’.”

Ophelia Brown, 17, has made global headlines after calling out reality tv star and model Kylie Jenner on Twitter for posing provocatively for an Interview magazine photo shoot in a wheelchair.

Brown says the fact the magazine justifies the photos as art trivializes the need for wheelchairs.

“Saying ‘oh it’s just art, it’s just a photo’ is kind of ridiculous because art has such a major influence on society that calling it art doesn’t make it any better.”

One of the many comments on Twitter that resonates with Brown is from @PunkinOnWheels who wrote “When Kylie sits in a wheelchair, she’s edgy and sexy. Whereas actual wheelchair-using models have to fight to find work.”

Brown says given the opportunity to say something to Jenner, she would say that she is lucky to be able-bodied and that a wheelchair does not represent a limitation.

“I am really just hoping that (the attention) will help educate people and that it will help empower disabled people,” says Brown. “And I hope it will give Kylie, the magazine and the photographer a new perspective…and to not have stuff like this happen again.”
