The chairman of the organization promoting the Victims of Communism memorial in Ottawa says he won’t comment on a report that the Liberal government has decided not to fund the controversial project until he gets “solid information”.
According to Global News, citing sources it did not identify, the government has decided it also will not fund the Mother of Canada, proposed for the headland of the Cabot Trail on Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island.
The Ottawa monument proposal has been the subject of months of controversy — and much opposition — because of its proposed location beside the Supreme Court on Wellington Street.
As public-private ventures the two projects had the support of the previous Conservative government. But since the election of the Liberals in October their future has been uncertain.
Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly, who is responsible for the National Capital Commission, said in mid-November she would decide “promptly” about the scale and location of the Victims of Communism memorial, which she referred to as a “priority” in her portfolio.
Ludwik Klimkowski, chair of Tribute to Liberty, the private fundraising group behind the project, said Thursday evening he had met with Joly to discuss the project earlier in the day. However, he would not say whether he was informed of any decision regarding the memorial project.
“Caucus met (Wednesday) and I met with the minister (Thursday morning), so there’s a huge inconsistency here,” he said. “There’s no source (for the Global News report) within either the ministry or in the government, so I can’t comment officially until I get some solid information.”
The $6-million project has been criticized by architects as well as politicians.
Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, in particular, has said the proposed site is not appropriate, suggesting the monument, if it goes ahead at all, would be better located in the Garden of the Provinces and Territories, a little further west on Wellington Street from the Supreme Court site.
The Global News report also said that while the Liberals might offer an alternative site for the memorial, they won’t provide half the funding, as the Conservatives were willing to do.
