Ottawa police have charged four out-of-town members of the Unifor union, including a senior assistant to national president Jerry Dias, in connection with a Nov. 13 attack on Coventry Connections’ head offices.

Busloads of members of Unifor — which represents Ottawa tax drivers involved in a longstanding dispute at the Ottawa airport — were brought to bolster demonstrators at the Coventry Connections headquarters and dispatch centre at 455 Coventry Rd.

The protest turned violent when demonstrators, apparently from out-of-town, muscled their way into the company offices and trashed the computers responsible for dispatching about a dozen taxi fleets across the province.

Police identified one of those charged Friday as Robert Orr, 55, of Woodstock, Ont. Orr, charged with assault, break and enter and mischief, was identified as the assistant to Unifor national president Dias, who was also at the protest.

Dias refused to comment on the incident, saying the courts would now be left to sort out the situation.

“I have confidence in the judicial system,” said Dias.

Also charged are: John Harte, 56, of Meaford, Ont., with two counts of assault, break and enter and mischief; Cary Macmillan, 56, of Brantford, Ont., with assault and mischief, and; Roland Kiehne, 56, of Whitby, Ont., with two counts of assault, break and enter and mischief.

Dias said he plans to bring up the plight of approximately 250 Airport Taxi-branded drivers who are still locked in a labour dispute over new fees to pickup passengers at the Ottawa airport, when the union defends its members in court.

Hanif Patni, president and CEO of Coventry Connections said in an email he would not comment on the charges.

“We continue to have planned talks with the mediator,” Patni wrote.

Police said they expect more charges would be laid but refused to make any further comment on the case.
