On Friday, Dec. 11, the Stairwell Carollers will be honouring their tradition of giving with another Christmas donation to a local charity.
The Stairwell Carollers were founded in 1977 by Pierre Massie in the residence stairwells of the University of Ottawa. Conducted by Massie from within the tenor section, the Carollers have grown to become an award-winning 30-member choir, and Massie has won many awards for his own choral compositions.
In addition to their musical achievements, the Stairwell Carollers also sing in a humanitarian key, as they are a registered charity themselves. Over the years, proceeds from their CD and ticket sales have allowed them to give more than $120,000 in music scholarships and donations to local charities.
Continuing this tradition, the Stairwell Carollers have announced that the Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization (OCISO) has been named the recipient of a $2,000 Christmas gift this year.
The Carollers recognize the great service that OCISO provides every year to as many as 10,000 immigrants and refugees in the Ottawa area. OCISO’s programs are delivered in more than 50 languages to clients from 120 countries around the world, and their work is augmented by the generous efforts of dozens of caring volunteers, both established and new Canadians.
“We are very grateful for this surprise gift from the Stairwell Carollers,” said Leslie Emory, OCISO’s executive director. “Their generous donation could not arrive at a better time as we are preparing to receive many refugee families and will be working diligently to ensure they are fully supported as they settle in our city.”
The Stairwell Carollers will make an official presentation of the gift to the OCISO at their annual Christmas fundraising concert at Knox Presbyterian Church (120 Lisgar St. at Elgin) on Friday, Dec. 11 at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are available at the door for $20 or in advance for $15 from The Leading Note, 370 Elgin St; Compact Music, 190 & 785 1/2 Bank St; Books on Beechwood, 35 Beechwood Ave., or online at www.stairwellcarollers.com/Concerts.html.
And if you’re looking for that perfect holiday gift, the Stairwell Carollers’ new CD, O magnum mysterium, will be on sale at the concert. Your purchase of a CD will help the Carollers make their next donation to a local charity in 2016.

David Rain, who sings second tenor, has been receiving his musical cues from the back of Pierre Massie’s head for 23 years with the Carollers. For more information, please visit www.stairwellcarollers.com
