Hockey fans and history buffs alike will have the opportunity to see and take photos with trophies from the Hockey Fall of Fame at the Library and Archives Canada building this weekend.

The trophies are part of the temporary exhibit “Hockey Marching as to War” at the LAC building which documents the First World War and Canadian hockey players who fought in the conflict.

The five trophies are the Jack Adams Award (for the coach of the year), Frank J. Selke Trophy (for the forward who demonstrates the best defensive skill), Conn Smythe Trophy (for MVPs during the playoffs), Georges Vézina Trophy (for the best goaltender of the year) and the Hart Memorial Trophy (for MVPs during the regular season).

“For me it’s the Vézina trophy,” said hockey fan Martin Vanderveen of his favourite trophy.

“I was joking with somebody earlier saying when I was a young boy I hoped my name would have been on that.”

Three of the trophies on display are named after Canadian war veterans and Hockey Hall of Fame inductees who fought during World War One.

“A number of the trophies are together with the military because Conn Smyth was in the military, as well as Jack Adams and Frank Selke,” said Mario Della-Savia of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

“They’re wonderful trophies. The best of the best received those trophies through the National Hockey League.”

While Della-Savia had said that the crowds have been a little slow, he says the hockey fans who have attended have been receptive.

“I thought it was very interesting to another side of things,” said Vanderveen. “Seeing how they had these hockey careers and they stood up and went out to fight for war to defend our rights and our freedoms.”

The display also includes the Memorial Cup, awarded to Canada’s major junior hockey champions.

The free event is open to the public Sunday from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m at 395 Wellington St.
