A man hunting birds in a field near Eagleson Road was caught up short by Ottawa police officers on Sunday morning — until they determined he was allowed to shoot in the area.

Ottawa police responded after receiving a call at 10:23 a.m. about a man possibly hunting some geese, but definitely firing a gun in the area of Eagleson and Flewellyn roads near Terry Fox Drive, said Sgt. Marc Benson.

“When we have reports of someone using a gun, we respond first and sort it out when we get there,” said Benson.

At least four squad cars attended the call but the officers quickly determined, “after consulting City by-laws,” that the hunter was permitted to shoot in the area.

There are many designated areas across the breadth of Ottawa for hunting, (see a map designating them here), but firearms are not allowed to be discharged within 450 metres of any housing development.

Hunters require a suitable provincial Outdoors Card and a yearly permit, including a federal migratory game bird permit if that is the target. Additional tags and seals might also be required, depending on the relevant species.

The duck and goose hunting season runs from Sept. 26 to Jan. 9.
