Famed Canadian impressionist André-Philippe Gagnon earned not one, but two standing ovations during a small and intimate benefit show he did Monday for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC.)

The audience first rose to its feet, applauding and cheering, at the end of Gagnon’s performance. It was once again upright and clapping when it was announced that the Quebec-born entertainer had been working pro bono that night.

Canadian vocal impressionist André-Philippe Gagnon, singing These Eyes by The Guess Who, performed at a benefit for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada on Monday, December 7, 2015, at Le Cordon Bleu Ottawa.

Gagnon, who’s known for his bang-on imitations of celebrities and singers, nailed the history of rock and roll in 30 minutes, from a crooning Elvis to a soothing, deep-voiced Barry White to Mick Jagger dancing like a wounded chicken. He featured such modern artists as Sam Smith and Milky Chance and, at one point, performed in iPod “shuffle” mode, switching from singer to singer every five seconds or so.

The $150-a-ticket fundraiser was held at Le Cordon Bleu on Laurier Avenue East and drew about 100 guests and sponsors for cocktails, canapés and silent-auction bidding.

Hosting the event was Chris Spiteri, a partner at presenting sponsor Spiteri & Ursulak law firm and corporate chair for the past two years of the LLSC’s Light The Night Walk fundraiser to help people battling blood cancers.

“What I really like about the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is that the lion’s share of the monies raised for this organization is put toward research and assisting people who have these diseases,” said Spiteri, who touched on experimental new treatments being done to kill cancer cells using a disabled form of HIV.
