Twin toddlers who were rescued from a blazing apartment in Ottawa Saturday have recovered enough to leave the hospital, fire officials said Wednesday.

“As of this morning both children have been released from CHEO,” firefighters announced on Twitter.

The pair of two-year-olds — a girl and a boy — had been taken to Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in serious condition Saturday afternoon after hot smoke filled an apartment while they were locked inside.

The drama began when their mother stepped into the hall of their Caldwell Avenue building to drop off a bag of garbage. One of the twins swung the door shut behind her, locking her in the hall.

The mother had left dinner cooking on the stove, and as she and several neighbours frantically tried to open the door, the food began to smoke, and finally to burn.

Eventually neighbour Samir Al-Rubaiy and two other men managed to smash their way through the door by using a fire extinguisher as a battering ram. By this time smoke was so thick in the apartment that they could barely see.

The little girl, Neva, was near the kitchen door, and rescuers found her quickly. Her brother Jeremiah, however, was farther inside the apartment and it took Al-Rubaiy several minutes of searching to find her.

By the time he found her and picked her up he himself was choking and disoriented. Fire officials say that’s when District Chief Don Smith arrived at the scene and brought Al-Rubaiy and the unconscious little girl to safety. Smith went into the apartment without protective gear.
