The man behind a viral post to surprise a “humble” Gabriel Pizza chef and single father of three with gifts and thousands of dollars from strangers around the world has uploaded a YouTube video showing the moment of the reveal.

Joshua Barbour began working with Darren at Gabriel Pizza in Kanata several weeks ago. Darren — affectionately nicknamed “Pizza Dad” and who prefers to only be referred to by his first name for privacy reasons — had a story that touched Barbour: Everything Darren makes working the late-night shift as a pizza chef goes towards raising his three children.

Joshua Barbour posted Darren’s story on image-sharing website Imgur on Monday and set up a GoFundMe page. In less than a day, the post received more than 16,000 “upvotes” and 350,000 views. The GoFundMe raised $4,000 in less than 24 hours. Barbour began receiving contributions from Japan, the United Kingdom, Australia, the U.S., Brazil, China, Ireland and Scotland, all wanting to donate money or send off toys and gifts to Pizza Dad.

As Darren arrived for what he thought was a regular shift on Tuesday night, Barbour surprised him with thousands of dollars from strangers, a goodie basket full of treats and snow suits, and the promise of presents soon to be delivered from around the world.

“I kid you not dude, I’ve got so much stuff for you, it’s unbelievable,” Barbour tells Darren in the video.

“Are you kidding me?”

“No, I’m not kidding you.”

When Barbour says he’s raised $4,100, Darren responds with a long pause, and then, “What? Get lost, man.” They share a big hug, with Darren stunned and laughing.

The video is 7:42 minutes long, but skip to the 4:30 mark if you want to watch the reveal.

The Citizen’s full story can be read here.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Barbour’s GoFundMe page has raised more than $4,800.
