Think Fourth of July, but indoors. That’s just one way to describe the fabulous and flawless holiday party U.S. Ambassador Bruce Heyman and his wife, Vicki, hosted for hundreds of guests at their official residence, Lornado, in Rockcliffe Park on Tuesday night.

You could hear the festive tunes playing as soon as you stepped onto the property, exquisitely decorated with lights and ornaments. Once inside, there was so much to admire, from the tasteful holiday decorations to the remarkable collection of art that filled every room on the main floor. Such sights of beauty faded into the background once the home became packed with an eclectic mix of guests from politics, diplomacy, business, law, journalism, sports and the arts.

The Heymans, a fun and outgoing couple, were seen receiving guests and posing for photos alongside an elegant Christmas tree in the living room. Once word broke that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was on his way, the pair assumed their new position near the front door. Heyman and the prime minister exchanged warm hugs (when asked if he’d like a glass of wine, Trudeau responded that he’d prefer a beer). Soon, Trudeau disappeared into a thick crowd of adoring fans.

US Ambassador Bruce Heyman welcomes Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to his official residence, Lornado, for a holiday party that he and his wife, Vicki Heyman, hosted for hundreds of guests on Tuesday, December 8, 2015.

There hasn’t been a time in recent memory when a prime minister has attended a Christmas party at Lornado, guests were heard discussing. “It means something,” remarked well-known Ottawa lawyer Jacques Shore, who’s a long-time guest of U.S. Embassy parties. “It’s the symbol of a new era.”

Guests also included Governor of the Bank of Canada Stephen Poloz, Chief of Defence Staff General Jonathan Vance, Supreme Court of Canada Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella, Canada’s new foreign affairs minister, Stéphane Dion, and Mayor Jim Watson.

As well, one of Ottawa’s most beloved Americans, Redblacks quarterback Henry Burris, was seen arriving with his wife, Nicole.

Other cabinet ministers spotted included: House Speaker Geoff Regan, Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan, Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland, Fisheries and Ocean Minister Hunter Tootoo, Veteran Affairs Minister Kent Hehr and Finance Minister Bill Morneau.

Featured that evening was the White House’s former executive pastry chef, Bill Yosses. If he felt his old boss’ presence in the room, it’s probably because US President Barack Obama was there, sort of: as a hanging portrait and as a life-sized cardboard cutout perfect for striking poses next to.
