As retirement announcements go it is, undoubtedly, a bit odd: “So long and thanks for all the fish.”
But then Eugene Haslam, the long-time owner of the York Street nightclub Zaphod Beeblebrox, has long been, well, swimming in a decidedly distinct pool.
Just over a year ago he posted on his Facebook site that he was putting Ottawa music lovers on “notice” of his intention to retire, well, some time. The posting was accompanied by a quotation from Douglas Adams, author of the cult-book The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which includes a character by the name of Zaphod Beeblebrox. The book ends with the “fish” quote.
That “time” came on Wednesday. Resorting once again to Facebook, Haslam informed the world that he’d “concluded an agreement to sell Zaphod’s to a staff member.”
“I’ve had a good long run,” he said in an interview, pointing out that his clientele now include the children of parents who came to Zaphod’s when they were younger. “It’s time to pass the torch.”
While declining to name the new owner (or the sale price), Haslam expressed the hope that The Nightclub at the Edge of the Galaxy will play on: “Once some legal and regulatory hurdles are cleared, this venue will continue with a new lease on life and will, hopefully, with the strong support of Ottawans, continue the legacy of our past 26+ years.
“I am profoundly grateful to Ottawans and the many visitors from Canada and around the world that have shared in this wonderful musical and social alternative.”
Haslam will turn over the keys, so to speak, at the end of January. In the meantime, he’s looking forward to one last Christmas season good time. (“Bands that want to play their last shows of my tenure in December and January should get in touch a.s.a.p.”)
And what, you might ask, will the retiring impresario do outside the nightclub? Well, it doesn’t sound like Haslam will be doing much fishing. But he does intend to stick around this galaxy.
“I will take a break and enjoy life, spend time in Ottawa and Montebello, travel, eat well, stay fit and surround myself with the company of good friends,” he wrote. “In time, I will explore new opportunities and challenges in Ottawa and continue to be of service to my community.”
You can’t keep a clubman down, it seems.
