Dr. Lindy Samson, a pediatric infectious disease physician whose research focuses on children with HIV, will become chief of staff at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario beginning in April.
Samson’s research also includes immunizations and the impact of social determinants on the health of children and youth. And she is involved in providing health services for Syrian refugee children arriving in Ottawa, who will have been screened for infectious diseases before arriving in Canada, but will require health-care services, including checkups and vaccines in some cases.
Samson has helped develop educational programs for new doctors and has led clinical, research and teaching initiatives at CHEO.
Her five-year appointment, which begins April 1, was confirmed by CHEO’s board of trustees.
“Dr. Samson is known as a strategic thinker, experienced clinician and seasoned leader. She will contribute her leadership skills to the CHEO physician community, the executive team and the whole hospital,” said board chair Erin Crowe.
Samson is a clinical investigator at the CHEO Research Institute, an associate professor in the department of pediatrics at the University of Ottawa and chief of the division of infectious diseases at CHEO.
She replaces Dr. Carrol Pitters, who has served as chief of staff for six years. She worked on the launch of integrated electronic health records and the adoption of a new quality improvement system. Pitters is an associate professor in the department of pediatrics at the University of Ottawa’s faculty of medicine and a staff physician in the Emergency Department at CHEO.
The chief of staff is responsible for organizing the activities of the medical staff and for ensuring the quality of clinical care and patient safety, reporting to the board of trustees.
