Ottawa – Winter may not be on the ground, but Winterlude is in the air. Canadian Heritage has officially announced its plans for the 2016 edition of Ottawa’s favourite winter festival, and those plans include three City partner sites: City Hall, Lansdowne and Shenkman Arts Centre.
The Rideau Canal, Jacques-Cartier Park in the Hull sector of Gatineau, and Confederation Park are the official sites for the event, which attracts over 600,000 people annually and generates revenue for our local economy.
“Hundreds of thousands of people take part in Winterlude activities each year, many travelling from outside of Canada to get here,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “There is no doubt about it, Winterlude puts the National Capital Region on the international map.”
At City Hall, most activities will take place on and around the Sens Rink of Dreams, such as Cool Science, Enbridge Energy on Ice and the Mayor’s Annual Family Day Skating Party, which will again add an extra day to Winterlude festivities.
Lansdowne will be a destination for family activities during the day, such as the Mad Trapper Snowshoe Ultimate Frisbee, and more adult-oriented entertainment in the evening. The government of Ontario will again provide funding for the Lansdowne Park Snowscapes events, including outdoor curling, the dance party finale and the Community Snow Sculpture Contest.
“Winterlude is truly an iconic festival that defines Ottawa, attracting thousands from across Ontario and around the world,” said Yasir Naqvi, Member of Provincial Parliament for Ottawa Centre. “It features fantastic activities for the whole family and Ontario is proud to provide over $120,000 through Celebrate Ontario to ensure everyone gets to enjoy this wonderful festival and join in the fun.”
Shenkman Arts Centre will feature Mudmen, The Nightingale by Rag and Bone Puppet Theatre and a return of Fête Frissons – a mini winter fest.
“These events will add excitement, colour and flavour to this winter extravaganza,” said Councillor Diane Deans, Chair of the City’s Community and Protective Services Committee. “I encourage everyone to take part in some of the many exciting Winterlude activities this year, and celebrate winter here in Canada’s capital.”
