Ottawa - The 2015 OC Transpo/Loblaw Annual Christmas Food Drive results today revealed that 109,495 food and non-perishable items and $32,382 in cash and food vouchers were delivered to the Ottawa Food Bank this week.
“The holiday season can be a difficult time for many individuals and families here in our city, but, thanks to the generosity of Ottawa residents through this year’s OC Transpo Food Drive, you are helping to make it that much brighter,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “I would like to thank OC Transpo employees, City employees, food drive partners and the many volunteers and donors who worked so hard to ensure the most vulnerable members of our community have food and supplies during this holiday season.”
The annual food drive has raised more than 3 million kilograms of food and thousands of dollars since it began in 1984. It is the oldest and largest annual food drive for the Ottawa Food Bank.
“Every monetary contribution and non-perishable food item donated through the OC Transpo/Loblaw Annual Christmas Food Drive represents another meal for someone struggling to make ends meet,” said Councillor Stephen Blais, Chair of the Transit Commission. “We live in a generous city where residents care for one another, and the results from this year’s food drive are a clear demonstration of that.”
On Saturday December 5, OC Transpo employees and other volunteers filled buses with food collected at participating Loblaws®, Real Canadian Superstore®, Your Independent Grocer®, and nofrills® locations. The OC Transpo/Loblaw Christmas Food Drive is a joint effort between OC Transpo, the City of Ottawa and local Loblaw banner stores.
“The Ottawa Food Bank and the OC Transpo/Loblaw Food Drive have been hand-in-hand for an incredible 31 years. As such, I want to thank everyone who made it special. Thank you to all who donated and volunteered, and thank you to OC Transpo, the City of Ottawa, and Loblaw for their continued commitment to help people in need in our community,” said Michael Maidment, Executive Director of the Ottawa Food Bank. “This event happens every year at such a critical time, and is pivotal to helping us get our neighbours beyond hunger.”
Each year, this event is staffed by more than 500 City of Ottawa volunteers who, along with their families give their time to benefit others in the community. The Food Drive collects for three local food banks: the Ottawa Food Bank, the Stittsville Food Bank and the Kanata Food Cupboard. Every month, 14 tons of food leaves the Ottawa Food Bank’s Michael Street warehouse. The Ottawa Food Bank provides 140 member agencies with supplies to feed 50,000 people each month.
