The Ottawa public school board has reached a tentative contract agreement with occasional teachers in its elementary schools, but deals with five other units representing part-time teachers, specialists and other support staff remain elusive.

The deal with the local unit of the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario was announced Friday afternoon. Terms of the deal remain confidential until it is ratified. The occasional teachers are expected to vote on the contract before Jan. 31, 2016.

“I am very pleased that we have been able to achieve this tentative, local agreement with our elementary occasional teachers,” Jennifer Adams, director of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, said in a news release. “We have the greatest respect for all of our employees and we value the work they do to support students.”

Friday’s announcement still leaves five bargaining units without a deal. They represent a myriad of duties, including school office and administrative staff, custodians and maintenance staff, library and guidance technicians, early childhood educators, educational assistants, psychologists, social workers and speech language pathologists, Adult ESL Instructors and childcare workers.

Contract talks with these groups are ongoing, the board said.
