Ottawans over the past few days may have noticed solitary white Christmas ornaments appearing on trees branches throughout the city.
There are approximately 1,000 of them, and each has written on it the message that “Christmas isn’t shiny and bright when you’re hungry,” along with the Ottawa Food Bank’s logo and website. They’re part of a contest to help raise awareness of, and donations to, the organization.
“We’re asking people who come across one to take a selfie with it and post it online with the hashtag #fillplates,” says Samantha Ingram, the Food Bank’s communications co-ordinator. “This not only helps spread awareness of the Ottawa Food Bank and our need this time of year, but it’s also a fun way to get people to participate and talk about the Ottawa Food Bank.”
People who do so are encouraged to keep the ornament, and three participants who post their photos to Facebook or Twitter will receive prizes: a gift basket courtesy of Bridgehead, and two packages each consisting of a Gabriel’s Pizza gift card and four tickets to an Ottawa 67’s hockey game.
The ornaments are largely found in central neighbourhoods such as Wellington West, the ByWard Market, Centretown, the Glebe and Old Ottawa South.
The Ottawa Food Bank helps upwards of 50,000 people each month, and is so far matching last year’s numbers in terms of donations. But Ingram notes that the next two weeks are when they typically see most of their holiday donations, and that this year’s mild December weather may have an adverse effect.
“It doesn’t really seem like it’s the holiday season so far, and so donating might not be at the top of everyone’s mind — if you’re not feeling the season, you might not be feeling the spirit. But we’re hoping that even without snow, that season of giving will still strike people.”
