Imagine a musical boy growing up in small-town Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland and learning that the National Arts Centre Orchestra was coming to visit, and that he’d get to hear classical – not within the confines of the compact cassette era – but live.
Skip ahead a few decades and that same boy, now a man, was seen seated in the front row of the free annual Christmas FanFair Concert presented by the NAC Orchestra Players’ Association on Sunday in the NAC Main Foyer.
And just like when he was a kid, Ottawa Food Bank executive director Michael Maidment listened to the orchestra with teary-eyed emotion.

The heart-warming, family friendly event featured popular holiday classics, a gorgeous-sounding choir, an audience sing-along, and an appearance from Santa and his own personal supply of candy canes. Conducting the concert was organizer David Thies-Thompson, a violist with the NAC Orchestra.

Just as joyful were the unscripted moments, such as two-year-old Hanako Kawasaki dancing with carefree abandon as her parents, NAC Orchestra Concertmaster Yosuke Kawasaki and NAC Orchestra Assistant Concertmaster Jessica Linnebach performed on stage just a few feet away from her.

Donations went to the Ottawa Food Bank, which provides food for 50,000 people every month, and to the Snowsuit Fund, which hands out warm outdoor clothing to 16,000 underprivileged children each winter. The latter charity was represented by long-time board member Sylvie Bigras, who, with Maidment, had the fun job of playing percussion during Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride number. They got to make whip-cracking sounds.
The concert, in its 29th year, was dedicated to the late Max Keeping, who served as a host and honourary conductor in past years.
In the crowd was the NAC’s president and CEO, Peter Herrndorf, and roughly 450 people, some of whom began arriving hours in advance to secure themselves a seat. By the time the concert began, both the main and second floor lobbies were packed.

The show included a performance by flutist Phoebe Robertson, winner of the 2015 NAC Orchestra Bursary Competition; the Leading Note Foundation’s young OrKidstra and KidSingers; and the Christ Church Cathedral choirs, conducted by choral director Matthew Larkin.
