Ottawa will be receiving at least four of the latest group of 214 Syrian refugees expected to arrived Tuesday in Toronto.
According to a Department of Immigration and Citizenship website, Ontario will take 180 of the new arrivals in this third group, with the remainder going to Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Nova Scotia.
As of Dec. 13, Canada has taken in 926 Syrian refugees — “just shy of 1,000,” as Immigration Minister John McCallum put it Monday. Most have come from refugee camps in Lebanon and Jordan.
The first arrivals came to Canada on military aircraft last Thursday. A second group landed in Montreal on Saturday. Tuesday’s wave will arrive on commercial flights.
Of the 180 allotted to Ontario, the single largest group — 106 — will take up residence in Willowdale, a long-established affluent Toronto-area community located in the district of North York. Another 33 are designated for Toronto.
The remaining 41 refugees will be dispersed elsewhere, including six in Kingston and five in Brockville.
McCallum said the Liberal government is “working very hard” to meet its target of bringing in 10,000 refugees by the end of December.
“In coming days, there will be many, many more flights,” he said, without mentioning when those flights are due or where they’ll be landing.
