The jury in the Vanier axe-killing trial is deliberating the fate of 24-year-old rapper Adrian Daou, accused of killing Jennifer Stewart for hip-hop fame.

It is a circumstantial case anchored in Daou’s bizarre confession. Daou, who has given a false murder confession in the past, is on trial for the 2010 killing of Stewart, a 36-year-old sex worker who was found dead in a Vanier parking lot.

The Ottawa police have yet to recover the weapon used and have no DNA linking the accused to the killing. In fact, the jury has heard that another man’s DNA was found on the body of Stewart, an aboriginal mother who turned tricks to feed her crack habit.

Daou confessed to police after doing 22 days in an isolation cell at the Innes Road jail. The mentally ill man, suicidal and under a psychiatrist’s care, was given pizza during his confession. He initially told police detectives that he had used a “military knife” to kill Stewart, when in fact she was killed by an axe.

The case against Daou is built on a series of bizarre confessions he gave police in February 2013. Daou told Ottawa detectives that he killed Stewart to become “a billionaire rap star.”

Daou has pleaded not guilty.
