Vanier rapper Adrian Daou was found guilty of first-degree murder the 2010 killing of aboriginal mom Jennifer Stewart.
The jury has been deliberating the fate of the 24-year-old rapper since Monday. The verdict carries a mandatory life sentence with no parole for 25 years.
The case was anchored in Daou’s bizarre confession given to police in February 2013. Daou, who had given a false murder confession in the past, told Ottawa detectives that he killed Stewart to become “a billionaire rap star.”
The Ottawa police have yet to recover the weapon used and have no DNA linking the accused to the killing. In fact, the jury has heard that another man’s DNA was found on the body of Stewart, a sex-trade worker found dead on the streets of Vanier.
Daou confessed to police after 22 days in an isolation cell at the Innes Road jail. The mentally ill man – suicidal and under a psychiatrist’s care – was given pizza during his confession. He initially told police detectives that he had used a “military knife” to kill Stewart, when in fact she was killed with an axe.
The jury was also shown a Canadian Tire receipt for items he said he used to kill, including an axe. He said he went on the “shopping trip for murder” days or around two weeks before the Aug. 19, 2010 killing. Canadian Tire, at the behest of police, searched their records and found one matching the four-item transaction, some two months before the murder. The police were unable to retrieve security video of the purchase in question because too much time had passed, court heard.
