It’s business as usual at Ottawa’s Le Cordon Bleu International culinary arts school on Laurier Avenue East, which is unaffected by the shutdown of 16 Le Cordon Bleu schools in the United States.
The U.S. schools were owned and operated independently by Career Education Corp. under the banner Le Cordon Bleu North America. CEC announced Wednesday it was wrapping up operations because of changes in U.S. federal regulations. The company expects to close its campuses in 2017. Le Cordon Bleu North America is based in Illinois and has schools in Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Orlando, Portland, Sacramento, San Francisco, Scottsdale and Seattle.
Ottawa’s Le Cordon Bleu school and its Signatures restaurant is operated by Le Cordon Bleu International, with its flagship 120-year-old school in Paris where renowned chef Julia Childs studied. Ottawa is one of 21 Le Cordon Bleu International schools around the world, including London, Madrid, Tokyo, Shanghai, Mexico City and Sydney, Australia.
“Le Cordon Bleu International acknowledges the announcement by Career Education Corporation (CEC), a company independent from Le Cordon Bleu International, that the Le Cordon Bleu North America campuses operated by CEC will be discontinuing in the USA and the current students will be taught out. The last intake for CEC’s Le Cordon Bleu North America schools will be January 2016,” Le Cordon Bleu International said in a statement.
“After a remarkable success leading to the opening of 16 schools in the USA in less than 10 years, the material changes to the legal framework in the USA and the consequences of such changes caused CEC’s educational and training business model to become non-viable. The USA programs are owned and operated independently by Career Education Corporation.
“Accordingly the closing of the Le Cordon Bleu North America campuses across the USA by Career Education Corporation will not affect any operations of Le Cordon Bleu International worldwide including the Le Cordon Bleu International school in Ottawa, Canada.”
