The sun rose over a changed landscape on Dalhousie Street Tuesday, after the famous sign on Mellos Restaurant disappeared in the night.

The vertical blue and red sign with the name and a big curving arrow was a landmark stretching up from the top of the first storey to the roof of the building.

Grainy photos circulating on Twitter Tuesday show a crane lifting it off in darkness and laying it on its side on a truck at about 10:30 p.m.

Monday dinner was the last meal served at Mellos. The restaurant is now closed, as the landlord refused to extend the lease.

During the same night, someone threw about two dozen eggs at the neighbouring ACE Mercado restaurant next door. ACE Mercado is expanding into the building that has operated under the Mellos name since the 1940s, and some have blamed it for the closing of Mellos, though ACE Mercado says it had nothing to do with the end of the Mellos lease.

In October, ACE Mercado owner Scott Porter told the Citizen he planned to keep the sign.

And at the same time, Sally Coutts, a City of Ottawa heritage co-ordinator, said the sign has heritage status.

“This building is in the ByWard Market Heritage Conservation District,” she said in a written response. “Therefore, the building, including its sign, is protected under the Ontario Heritage Act.”

Asked if there are rules for moving signs and putting them up at a new establishment, she said an “application to alter” would be required.

— More to come.
