With three statutory holidays over a seven-day span, expect plenty of closings and service reductions through the Christmas and New Year’s period. Among them:
TRAVEL
OC Transpo is operating on a reduced weekday schedule from Dec. 21 to 24 and Dec. 29 to 30. Buses will be on a Sunday schedule on Dec. 25 and 27, and Saturday schedule on Dec. 26 and 28.
On New Year’s Eve buses will run as usual, but will be free from 8 p.m. to late.
Buses will be on a Sunday schedule on Jan. 1.
Para Transpo will be on holiday service on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day; regularly scheduled trips on those days will be automatically cancelled. Book trips by calling 613-244-7272 on or after:
• Dec. 18 for Christmas Day
• Dec. 19 for Boxing Day
• Dec. 25 for New Year’s Day
WASTE PICKUP
There will be no curbside collection of garbage, recycling or green-bin waste in Ottawa on Christmas Day. That pickup will take place on Boxing Day, Saturday, Dec. 26. Collections regularly scheduled for Jan. 1 will instead take place on Jan. 2.
All other collection days will not be affected.
Christmas trees will be collected on regularly scheduled days. Trees with remaining decorations or wrapped in bags will not be collected.
SHOPPING
All grocery stores will be closed on Christmas Day.
All shopping malls will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Other mall hours:
• Rideau Centre: Dec. 24, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Boxing Day, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• Bayshore Mall: Dec. 24 and Dec. 31, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Boxing Day, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
• St. Laurent Shopping Centre: Dec. 24 and Dec. 31, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Boxing Day, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
• Place d’Orléans, Dec. 24 and Dec. 31, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Boxing Day, 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Liquor Control Board of Ontario stores will be open until 6 p.m. on Dec. 24 and Jan. 1.
LCBO stores and head office will be closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day, but some LCBO agency stores may open on Boxing Day in smaller communities.
RECREATION
Most movie theatres will be open on Christmas Day.
The Canadian Museum of History, Canadian Museum of Nature, Canadian War Museum and the Space and Aviation Museum and Canadian Food and Agriculture Museum will close at 2 p.m. and the National Gallery of Canada at 5 p.m. on Dec. 24. All will be closed on Christmas Day; all but the National Gallery will open on New Year’s Day.
The museums of History, War and Nature will close for annual maintenance from Jan. 4 to 8.
The Ottawa Public Library will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Some branches will have modified schedules on Dec. 24 and 31, with all closing at 3 p.m. Regular hours will be offered at all branches from Dec. 27 to 30.
City of Ottawa archives, arts centres, theatres and museums will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. The Karsh-Masson Gallery, Barbara Ann Scott Gallery and Ottawa Art Gallery annex will be open daily throughout the holidays. Visit ottawa.ca for more information.
Recreation facilities, swimming, skating and fitness classes will operate on modified schedules during the holiday season. Most facilities, public swimming, skating, aquatic and fitness classes are cancelled on Christmas and New Year’s days.
The Sens Rink of Dreams and Lansdowne Skating Court will be open, weather permitting, on Dec. 24 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Christmas Day from 1 to 11 p.m., Boxing Day from noon to 11 p.m., New Year’s Eve from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. and New Year’s Day from noon to 11 p.m.
The Ben Franklin outdoor skating rink will be open, weather permitting, on Dec. 24, 26, 31 and Jan. 1 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. It will be closed Christmas Day, but will be open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.

SERVICES
Ottawa City Hall, seven client service centres and Provincial Offences Court will be closed on Christmas Day, Monday, Dec. 28, and New Year’s Day. Rural client service centres will be open on a reduced scheduled from Dec. 21 to 24, and will be closed from Dec. 28 to Jan. 1.
CITIZEN
Ottawacitizen.com and the Citizen’s mobile app will be updated throughout the holiday period. The Citizen will not publish print or e-paper editions on Dec. 25 or Jan. 1. TV Times will be distributed in the Dec. 26 and Jan. 2 editions for TV Times subscribers.
Counter staff will be present from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31 and 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 28-30.
Citizen call centre hours: Dec. 24, 6 a.m. to noon; Dec. 26, 8 a.m. to noon; Dec. 28-30, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., Dec. 31, 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
