Tens of thousands of Ottawa residents were without power during the day on Christmas Eve as winds caused power outages across the province.

Hydro One is warning customers to expect delays in seeing their electricity turned back on as a wind storm, which is bringing colder temperatures, is working its way across the province.

More than 70,000 homes in central and southern Ontario are without power due to winds, which have sent hydro crews scrambling to restore electricity to homes on Christmas Eve. In Ottawa, more than 1,800 homes serviced by Hydro One are currently without power. Hydro One expects the power to be restored around 1:30 p.m., but a spokeswoman for the utility said with everything going on across the province, it will likely be later than that.

Hydro Ottawa is struggling with its own issues as a result of the wind storm.

A sudden power outage forced the Bayshore Shopping Centre to close for a short while on Thursday morning, one of the busiest shopping days of the year. It reopened in less than an hour.

According to Hydro Ottawa the power outage affects around 20,000 customers in the Baseline Road, Carling Avenue, Richmond Road and Bayshore Area, which includes the mall.

Hydro Ottawa crews have responded and are working to fix the issue.

More to come.
