Firefighters in Gatineau saved a family’s Christmas gifts in a Christmas Eve fire but the residents will be opening the presents at the homes of relatives.

Firefighters say four adults and two children were rescued from the Thursday morning blaze at 147 Nicolet St. in the city’s Hull sector.

“As we entered the home, it was very smoky, but the firefighters spotted a quite a few gifts in a side room and the living room,” said Gatineau fire Chief Daniel St-Jacques, who was at the scene.

“We made a special effort to get the presents out so the residents would have something to celebrate, even if it wasn’t in their home.”

St-Jacques said firefighters’ efforts were hampered by the home’s unusual construction: there were three roofs on top of the building and the smoke fire was in between them.

The Red Cross took charge of the victims at the scene, but they have since moved in with family members “at least for the holiday period,” the chief said.
Damages have been estimated at $102,000 but an investigation into the cause is continuing.

There were no injuries.
