Environment Canada issued a freezing rain warning for Ottawa early Saturday morning, as a low pressure system originating from the American southwest is expected to send a mixed bag of wintry weather into the region on Saturday night.
The warning, which covers Kanata to Orléans, notes that “snow and ice pellets are forecast to develop this evening in most areas then change to freezing rain late this evening or overnight.”
Saturday’s forecast calls for a mix of sun and cloud, with a high of 3 C.
The freezing rain will continue Sunday morning before changing briefly to snow or flurries, with an expected two centimetres of snow and ice pellets and the temperature steady near -1 C.
The agency warns that surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and hazardous, and urges residents to take extra care when walking or driving. Ice buildup may also cause tree branches to break, and power outages may occur.
