Temperatures in the nation’s capital have fallen to nippy norms from recent record highs, but winter won’t arrive in force until tonight.

A winter storm watch and driving advisory are in effect for Ottawa with total snowfall accumulations of 20 to 35 cm. predicted before above-freezing temperatures return Wednesday.

Environment Canada says a storm from Texas will spread heavy, blowing snow into the region Monday night and into Tuesday.

The government website issued a statement saying road travel should be avoided if possible.

“Travel conditions will deteriorate Monday night as visibilities drop to near zero and roads become snow covered. The snow and blowing snow will continue Tuesday. Snowfall amounts of 20 to 30 cm can be expected before the snow begins to taper off Tuesday night.”
