The region’s ski resorts are hungry for a big snowfall — but also for sustained cold weather so that they can make their own snow.
We asked Pierre Bourdages, general manager of Mont Cascades, which is more important. “Both!” he said.
“It’s easier with the cold to make snow faster and open more trails,” he said. “With 20 centimetres (of snow expected Tuesday), for sure that helps. That will excite people,” he said. “But snowmaking right now, with the cold, is the best way to open more trails quickly.”
Monday’s weather of about –10 C was ideal for snowmaking, he said. The snow forms faster than when the temperature is only –3 to –5 C.
In the extreme warmth of Dec. 24, his staff stayed off the existing snow to avoid damaging it. But he says the current weather is now perfect.
“The next 15 days we can see that the weather forecast is on our side.”
As of Monday, Camp Fortune had only three runs open, Mount Pakenham had two, and Vorlage and Mont Cascades advertised one run each.
David Phillips of Environment Canada said this storm will be the end of our mild start to winter, as snow seals in any remaining warmth in the ground.
“Once you get snow of course it begets the cold,” he said. “It becomes a little more difficult to get those balmy temperatures we have had.”
The storm “is significant because it’s the first one” of the year and it will upset people’s travel plans, he said. But he thinks it will all be forgotten in a couple of months — just one heavy dump of snow among several that we will have during the winter.
“It’s hard to know whether this will be the significant one of the year. But typically we wouldn’t even remember this storm when we come to February-March.”
