The Ottawa Police Service will see a few changes in the new year, including the closing of its front service desks at two stations, along with about a $1 increase for police records checks.
As of Jan. 8, the front desks at 245 Greenbank Rd. and 4561 Bank St. will be closed. Once closed, public access will not be available unless prior arrangements are made and a visitor is accompanied by a police member into the building.
The front desks at 474 Elgin St., 3343 St. Joseph Blvd. and 233 Huntmar Dr. will continue to operate seven days a week, providing the same broad range of services, including police and collision reporting, vehicle releases and police records checks. As well, the facility at 2670 Queensview Dr. is dedicated to background clearance, Freedom of Information requests and criminal record checks, which will increase in price in the new year by about $1.
In a written statement, District Support Insp. Tessa Youngson-Larochelle said the closings enable police to better support front desk services and collision reporting, providing more efficient service to the public.
“The change is the result of an in depth workload analysis, health and safety considerations and the repurposing of both buildings,” says Youngson-Larochelle. “This also supports the current Service Initiative objective to make the best use of our resources.”
The rate has gone up by about two per cent over the past couple of years. For example, a criminal records check will be $48 in 2016. It was $47 in 2015 and $46 in 2014.
