The Ontario Provincial Police have charged a Toronto-area man in relation to an collision in Carleton Place on Wednesday that left a woman dead.
According to police, Elizabeth Harris, 29, of Smiths Falls was driving a Chrysler car northbound from Highway 15 at the intersection with Highway 7 at about 8.20 a.m. when her vehicle was struck by a transport truck. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Charged with failing to stop at a red light is Gordon Sarles, 64, of Richmond Hill.
Detours were in place around the busy intersection until 2 p.m. Wednesday while collision investigators examined the scene.
Harris was the mother of three children, aged 8, 6 and 4. She was a personal support worker who lived in Smiths Falls but travelled to Carleton Place daily. She had just dropped her children off at a daycare provider and was on her way to work when the accident happened, according to family members.
She was also the sole income provider for the family. Her husband had recently returned to school to learn a new trade. Harris’s family has set up a crowd funding initiative in hopes of raising $5,000 to help provide for the children. As of Thursday morning the initiative had already raised more than $2,800.
