A campaign to return top-level ski competitions to the Ottawa area has surpassed its goal, organizers say.

The crowdsourced drive raised more than $185,000 by its closing day Thursday, surpassing a $150,000 target set in March and allowing the Mont Ste. Marie resort to build a run that meets International Ski Federation (FIS) super-G standards.

The addition could spark the return of slalom and giant slalom races and allow Canadian and Nor-Am championships to take place in Western Quebec.

The run will be named for alpine champion and Mont Ste. Marie Ski Club member Dustin Cook.

In the past, the resort about an hour north of Ottawa was able to host many provincial, FIS and North American Championship races. But with the introduction of the “parabolic ski” in the 1990s, skiers began to carve much farther across the hill at greater speeds during a race, rendering Mont Ste. Marie’s Outaouais run too narrow to comply with FIS safety standards.

To receive approval, a run needs to be at least 40 metres wide with a vertical drop of 250 metres.

Rocks had to be removed to make the run long and wide enough for international standards.

Future provincial championships will require FIS certification, a fact many feared could leave area athletes at a disadvantage because they would have to travel to train and compete.

“What was remarkable was that within six moths of conception last March, we raised enough funds early to kick-start the project,” said Chris Klotz, an organizer of the campaign. “Contractors were hired and work commenced blasting massive rocks to lengthen and widen the run.”

Klotz called the project “the first major improvement to a ski run in the region in a generation.”

The run will be owned and operated by the resort. It is expected to open shortly.

Supporters have been vocal about the initiative online.

“Our passion for ski racing here in the Outaouais is as strong as ever,” said Patrick Biggs on the campaign web page. “We need to bring our ski hills into the new century to give our young racers the opportunities to have safe and effective training and racing environments. Let’s change the face of skiing in Ottawa-Gatineau.”

Gabriel Bouffard shared similar thoughts.

“I can’t express how good that would be for our region, our ski racers and the (Mont Ste. Marie) community,” she said.

Klotz said organizers will launch a new Mont Ste. Marie Olympic Fund to support next-generation skiers.

“You just never know who the next superstar might be.”
