Ottawa police are recommending extra vigilance at area jewelry stores following a second noisy smash-and-grab theft at a jeweller Monday night.

Robbery squad detectives say they believe the robbery at Billings Bridge Plaza Monday night is connected to a similar heist at Carlingwood Plaza just before Christmas.

Police said the four masked men stormed the Billings Bridge jewelry store at about 8:30 p.m. Monday night.

One of the suspects carrying a large sledgehammer began to break a number of display cases in the store to get at the merchandise.

The other suspects grabbed the items from the cases before fleeing into the mall. There were no injuries as a result of the incident.

The suspects are all described as black men, believed to be between 18 and 22 years of age.

Police said they are working on the assumption this robbery is related to the noisy Dec. 23 smash-and-grab at Carlingwood.

In that case, three masked suspects stormed the Charm Diamond Centre at about 6:20 p.m. The suspects entered the store with hammers, smashed the glass display, grabbed jewelry and watches, then fled.

The suspects were also described as black men, roughly 18 to 22 years old.

Investigators are asking jewelry store employees to report any suspicious activity or persons they may have noticed in recent weeks.

Anyone with information about these robberies is asked to contact the Ottawa police robbery unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5116.
