Ottawa police have charged a fifth out-of-town member of the Unifor union in connection with a Nov. 13 attack on the head offices of taxi dispatcher Coventry Connections.
On Tuesday, police charged Gregory Whitson, 48, of Windsor, Ont., with mischief. Whitson is listed a member of Unifor Local 200, which represents Ford Motor Co. workers in Windsor.
He is to appear in court on Jan. 7.
On Nov. 13, busloads of members of Unifor, which represents Ottawa taxi drivers involved in a long-standing dispute at the Ottawa airport, were brought to bolster demonstrators at the Coventry Connections headquarters and dispatch centre at 455 Coventry Rd.
The protest turned violent when demonstrators muscled their way into the company offices and trashed the computers responsible for dispatching about a dozen taxi fleets across the province.
Police have already laid charges against four other Unifor members, including two executives, who are accused of being involved in the mayhem that took place within the offices.
Police identified one of the men charged as Robert Orr, 55, of Woodstock, Ont. Orr, who faces assault, mischief and break and enter charges, is the assistant to Unifor national president Jerry Dias, who was also at the protest.
Police also charged John Harte, 56, of Meaford, Ont., with two counts of assault, break and enter and mischief; Cary Macmillan, 56, of Brantford, Ont., with assault and mischief, and; Roland Kiehne, 56, of Whitby, Ont., with two counts of assault, break and enter and mischief. Kiehne is Unifor’s director of political action and membership mobilization.
