It was hockey night in Havana as the stars of the Ottawa Senators got their mojo – or was it mojito – on for the 2016 Ferguslea Senators Soirée: Cuban Cabaret, presented by Bell, at the Hilton Lac-Leamy on Tuesday night.
The sold-out, $500-a-ticket gala raised $373,400 to help new Canadian and underprivileged kids take part in sports, recreation and educational programs that will improve their physical and mental wellness.
“Tonight, it’s all about the kids,” Sens captain Erik Karlsson said as he thanked the 750-person crowd for helping local children “chase their dreams.”

Otawa Senators captain Erik Karlsson addressed a sold-out crowd at the 2016 Ferguslea Senators Soirée held at the Hilton Lac-Leamy on Tuesday, January 5, 2016.
“When I was growing up [in Sweden], it was my dream to play for a NHL team. To get there, a lot of people made sacrifices. Early practices, out-of-town tournaments, registration fees and equipment costs; it all added up. I was very fortunate to be surrounded by people who believed in me, especially my parents, who drove me everywhere I wanted to go.
“Unfortunately, some kids don’t have the resources or the people to give them that opportunity. With events like tonight, the Ottawa Senators Foundation and our hockey club are helping to provide those opportunities for other kids.”
You could almost feel the warm tropical breeze blowing as Latin rhythms and costumed dancers entertained guests against an inviting backdrop of palm trees and Old Havana streetscapes. Gala host and celebrity auctioneer “Stuntman” Stu Schwartz, a local radio personality and PA announcer for the Senators, brought a fiesta feel to the night. At the podium, he lit a Cuban cigar and happily puffed away but was left wincing after downing a straight shot of Havana Club rum.

Canada and Cuba have just finished celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations. Each year, more than one million Canucks visit the Caribbean island, the crowd was told. The sun, beaches, culture, rum and cigars, safe travel and warm hospitality are just a few of the big draws, said Cuban Ambassador Julio Garmendia Peña (there’s no easy way to say it: hockey does not make the list with this baseball-loving country.)
Other special guests included Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau. Also seen were the hockey club’s president, Cyril Leeder, and its head coach, Dave Cameron. Dressed for the occasion was a Panama hat-wearing Dan Greenberg of Ferguslea Properties, with his wife, Barbara Crook.

Ottawa Senators hockey fans Dan Greenberg, president of Ferguslea Properties Limited, and his wife, Barbara Crook, were back to lend their support to the Cuban-themed 2016 Ferguslea Senators Soirée, an annual charity gala held at the Hilton Lac-Leamy on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 to raise funds for local children and youth.
This year’s live auction included such priceless packages as a practice session for a minor hockey team at the Canadian Tire Centre, with Cameron as coach; a spot for two in the front row during the Ottawa Senators’ official team photo; a game, with all the bells and whistles, against the Senators Alumni; a night of Cuban fine dining for 10 with the ambassador at his official residence; a fan’s ultimate game experience; and a hands-on culinary night for 12 with Leeder and his wife, Lydia, at the Shaw Centre’s CrEATe Kitchen. Leeder is kicking in the vino.
