After 30 years in business, Maxwell’s, the nightclub and eatery on Elgin Street, is closing and will be replaced by two new “exciting” restaurants — including a popular Westboro vegetarian spot.

Maxwell’s, the longtime restaurant and bar on Elgin Street, is closing on Jan. 17 after 30 years in the business.

In a message posted to its window and also on Facebook, the downtown restaurant-bar announced its last day would be Jan. 17, and extended its “heartfelt appreciation” for customers’ “years of patronage.”

“A lot of regulars are really sad to see us close after so many years,” said the restaurant’s owner, Patrick Cheang, in an interview with the Citizen. “But it’s outlived its course on Elgin Street as Maxwell’s, and it’s time for a dramatic change.”

That change will see the top half of the two-level establishment transformed into an “edgy, yet sophisticated” new bar, while trendy vegetarian and vegan joint Pure Kitchen on Richmond Road in Westboro has plans to open a second location in the bottom half. Cheang, who will retain ownership of the upper-level bar only, said he hopes to attract a different, more hip 25- to 45-year-old demographic with the switch.

“Maxwell’s has had a reputation as a cougar bar for a long time,” said Cheang. “We’re going to do away with that.”

Cheang plans to reinvent the space with a smaller menu and “dramatic changes in decor,” and hopes all renovations will be complete in late March.

Kyle Cruickshank, Pure Kitchen’s co-owner and general manager, said he’s “really excited” for the planned second location, which will offer a model similar to the Richmond Road spot, with brunch and a late-night menu.

“The Westboro location is a very lifestyle-oriented market with MEC and Lululemon,” said Cruickshank. “On Elgin, the nightlife and buzz of the street will be a very different scene and crowd. We hope to focus a little more on takeout for the business people down in the area.”

The revamping of Maxwell’s space continues a string of buzzy new restaurants opening on Elgin Street in the last several years, starting with El Camino in 2013, and more recently with neighbouring pan-Asian spot Datsun, Clocktower Brew Pub and a new Whalesbone location in the former @home kitchen store, opening some time in the spring.

“There’s a lot of good things happening on Elgin Street in the next 12 months,” said Cheang. “With Pure Kitchen, it’s another great plus. I feel like there’s a lot of upswing happening in the next little while.”
