Feeling sleepy and cold and as if the holidays have taken every last ounce of strength that ever existed in your body?
Shake it off — as some famous blonde says, get out the winter boots, the dancing shoes that fit in your coat pockets and get ready for some pop fun, starting with an exciting EP release show from the newly formed Adult Children, comprised of John Aaron Cockburn (Little Suns, currently on hiatus) and Maxim Cossette (Sick Sick Sicks).
The duo play surreal but soothing electric folk — think banjo and synths — that would fit at either an emo-child bonfire party or yoga studio retreat; the outdoor quotient is not surprising as they wrote the album, Elements, while sitting on a beach or in a forest in B.C. this past summer.
Cockburn is now living on Salt Spring Island and Cossette in Ottawa, so the songs were assembled long distance, with the banjo parts recorded here, and more instruments and electronic production done in B.C. They’re joined by locals Keturah Johnson, offering heavy soul originals, and Cossette’s Sick Sick Sicks (playing as the Maxim Cossette Combo). Jan. 7, 8 p.m., Mercury Lounge. Tickets: $10.
A real treat is the quiet arrival of power pop grand-daddy Paul Collins. For some reason, House of Targ has still not publicized the ticket price for this event, which would raise doubts about the show happening (not least because, it’s Paul Collins!), but we know he recently performed in Montreal, with the same lineup. Hopefully, the tickets will become available some time before the show date (Jan. 8).
Collins, the founder of The Nerves and The Beat (or Paul Collins Beat, if one’s affiliation is to the other band across the Atlantic) solidified the west coast power pop sound in the late 1970’s and 80’s. Their eponymous album, mostly written by Collins, is still seen as one of the iconic, pre-new wave albums about girls and guitars and good times. Collins is still recording and touring with new material, often created with other luminaries like Wally Palmar, Ringo Starr, et al.
He is joined by Montreal’s Pale Lips, a to-watch, bubblegum punk group reflecting Collins’ legacy in every song. The young, all-female band, whose debut LP is coming out this year, say they were “super excited” (read: heads exploded) to open for the living legend. Jan. 8, 10 p.m., 1077 Bank St. Ticket price to-be-announced. www.houseoftarg.com
And not to overlook him, The Tea Party frontman Jeff Martin is on a mini-tour away from the warmth of his home in Australia and is stopping at Mavericks. It’s an all acoustic show, but we are told his iconic voice is even more arresting that way. Jan. 8, 8 p.m., Mavericks, 221 Rideau St. Tickets: $22. www.mavericksbar.com
The new kings of old time, the ever-entertaining, Sheesham and Lotus & Son, who should hand out sepia-toned glasses to their audience at the door, bring old time Americana, blues and ragtime to life, joyously, on jaw-harps, gourd bangos and homemade instruments — including their own acoustic filter, with comedic touches —perfect for kids of all ages.. Jan. 8, 8 p.m, Rosemount Hall. Tickets: $20 in advance, $25 at the door. www.ottawacontra.ca
For something more establishment, Mackenzie Di Millo, otherwise known as the frontman of Monday I Retire (who have played pretty much every local venue, including the inaugural CityFolk), is graduating from the Jazz Music Vocals program at Carleton University and will be performing a recital of rhythm and blues songs across the eras as part of her final year showcase, in a show open to all ages, “including grandmas,” she says. Jan. 8, 7:30 p.m., Kailash Mital Theatre. Tickets: $10, pay-what-you-can/students, free for Carleton faculty and children 12 years and under. facebook.com
In need of a good time? Ottawa group The Bristol Hum are a band to be watched, with a distinct retro style, informed by the 70’s — as evidenced by their hair to their rock and occasional folk tunes — but intriguingly off-set by tight rhythms, showmanship and technical prowess. The first single off their debut album, released in 2015, and featuring the vocal stylings of The Peptides, got air play locally. They are joined by Toronto’s Jim Dan Dee, offering grunge blues, and psychedelic rock from Ottawa’s Masters of Nothing. Saturday, Jan. 9, 9:30 p.m., The Rainbow, 76 Murray St.Tickets: $10. therainbow.ca
NAC Presents, who bring Canadian acts that often sell out to the Fourth Stage, are celebrating their 5th anniversary with a party in the main lobby at 53 Elgin St. It starts at a ate-for-them 9 p.m. an includes the soul rock of The Lionyls, electro-indigenous creations of A Tribe Called Red, dark, multi-discplinary pop of U.S. Girls (aka Meg Remy) and the artists we keep saying everyone should be following, Mehdi Cayenne. There will be drinks, snacks and dance beats from DJ Noah. Jan. 9, 9 p.m., NAC. Tickets: from $15. nac-cna.ca
Ice Nine hit Ottawa on tour with their new album.
Not really Sunday music, but who are we to say? American hip hop artist Obie Trice, who performed on the 8-Mile soundtrack and has worked with Dr. Dre, Busta Rhymes, 50 Cent and Timbaland, is in O-Town, performing with locals Dopekiid, Ickarus, Léon ‘fa du Fond, C-Note. Jan. 10, 8 p.m., Ritual. Tickets: $20 in advance, $25 at the door, V.I.P $40. www.ticketfly.com
Tuesday gets loud, starting with “theatrecore” scream-y group Ice Nine Kills, who are touring in support of their new album Every Trick in the Book, with lyrics that have taken a massive leap forward in complexity and interest, possibly due to being inspired by books — even if books off a high school reading list. Be entertained reading the Reddit post of fans who squee over the guitar licks but wonder if Frankenstein is “metal enough” to inspire the band. They play with Earthworks, Trentia, Southpaw. Jan. 12, 7 p.m., Club Saw. Tickets: $13. spectrasonic.com
Then, Swedish metal band Enforcer, with the vocal range and stage presence enjoyed by the seminal hard rockers of yore, are joined by California thrashers Warbringer on a joint-headlining tour in Canada and the U.S. (It’s Warbringer’s turn to “headline” in Ottawa.) They’re also joined by other California natives Exmortus and Toronto’s Cauldron. Jan. 12, 7:30 p.m., Ritual. Tickets: $20 in advance. spectrasonic.com
