Police in Belize have arrested a 19-year-old man and youth in connection with the death of Canadian filmmaker Matthiew Klinck.
The men, both Belizeans, were arrested Wednesday night and are being questioned, police Insp. Reymundo Reyes said Friday morning. A decision on whether to charge them was expected later Friday, Reyes said.
“We are working along with our legal adviser to see what case we can make,” Reyes said.
Police recovered a large quantity of cash during the search of a house, he said.
“There are some loose ends that we need to link even though we believe that this money is part of the proceeds of the crime. That is what we are working on,” Reyes said.
Klinck, 37, was a native of Aylmer, Que., who had lived in Belize since 2011. A talented filmmaker, Klinck had worked to help develop a homegrown film industry in the Central American country of about 350,000 people. Friends found his body Monday outside the door to his house near the community of Spanish Lookout. Expensive electronics and camera equipment were left untouched by his killer or killers.
Klinck’s mother, Louise Dallaire, travelled to Belize Thursday. A memorial service is planned for Saturday in Belize.
Klinck’s film credits include the comedy film Hank and Mike, The Curse of Xtabi — the first feature film shot entirely in Belize with Belizean actors and crew — and a pilot for the soap opera La Isla Bonita Telenovella.
