The Ottawa region’s crazy winter is expected to take another wild turn this weekend as forecasters are predicting heavy rains and winds are on the way.

Environment Canada issued a cautionary weather statement early Saturday to say 20 to 30 mm of rain is expecting to fall Sunday in the Ottawa area.

Strong winds are expected later Sunday evening, growing particularly blustery in regions closer to Lake Ontario.

The city has issued an advisory asking residents to help keep catch basins or storm drains and street gutters clear to ease the flow of storm water to avoid local flooding.

The city has more than 56,000 catch basin type drains to deal with rain or melting snow and ice.

Residents who suspect the catch basins are blocked can call the city at 311, or contact via the city’s website.

The weather notice comes after a freezing rain warning ending Saturday morning. These conditions made for a slippery drive but area police reported few accidents or traffic problems.

Temperatures this weekend are expected to reach a high of 5 C on Saturday and 7 C on Sunday, before falling to a low of -8 C Sunday night and a high of -7 C on Monday.

The rain is expected to turn into snow flurries Sunday night, and into Monday.

Salt trucks and snowplows will continue to out clearing streets and sidewalks.

Meanwhile, the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority warned any heavy rainfall will melt snow on the ground, raising water levels. Residents near streams and lakes are advised to be cautious.
