City plows and salting trucks were to hit the roads overnight as another winter snowstorm bears down on the National Capital Region.

Environment Canada is predicting five centimetres of snow overnight Monday, with another two to four centimetres forecast for later in the day Tuesday.

Stung by criticism of the cleanup from the Dec. 29 storm that dumped 20 centimetres of snow on the city — more in some areas — the city issued a press release Monday afternoon outlining what residents should expect during this latest storm.

At two to five centimetres, crews will salt Highway 174, the Transitway, and all major and arterial roads. Plows will clear sidewalks and cycle lanes in the downtown core. As well, residents are encouraged to use a number of do-it-yourself grit boxes around the city to sand slippery sidewalks.

When and if snowfall reaches seven centimetres, plows will clear secondary and residential roads.

What residents shouldn’t expect, however, is to use the city’s Where’s My Plow web tool. It’s down for tweaking.

“Regarding the Where Is My Plow web tool, the City has completed initial pilot testing and analyzing the feedback and is now making adjustments to the tool. As a result it will not be available for this weather event,” the city says.

You can find out more about storm preparations at the city’s Winter Weather webpage at ottawa.ca.
